What is Aseprite?
Aseprite is a pixel-art editor for drawing sprites and building frame-by-frame animations. Its layer and frame controls keep artwork and animation timing separate, while frame tags group multiple animations in one project. Onion skinning shows neighboring frames as a drawing reference, and the preview can play a section forward, backward or in ping-pong mode.
Painting tools include palette editing, pixel-perfect strokes, shading and tiled previews for repeating patterns. The full application can export animated GIFs, PNG image sequences and sprite sheets with PNG and JSON data for a game-art workflow.
The download here is the publisher’s Windows trial ZIP, version 1.3.18.6, not the paid full application. The publisher explicitly warns that the trial cannot save files: use it to evaluate the editor, not to produce work you need to keep. A purchased license provides the full application under the Aseprite EULA. The gallery image illustrates an older interface and is not a screenshot of this trial release.
What it offers
- Organize pixel artwork with layers and frame-by-frame animation controls.
- Tag frame ranges to keep multiple animations in one project.
- Use onion skinning and forward, reverse or ping-pong animation previews.
- Draw with pixel-perfect strokes, shading tools and editable color palettes.
- The full application exports animated GIFs, PNG sequences and PNG/JSON sprite sheets.
Good to know
- The linked trial cannot save files; it is not a substitute for the paid full application.
- GIF output is limited by the format’s 256-color constraints and can change colors in artwork using more colors or blending effects.
