What is Audacity?
Audacity records and edits audio for projects such as spoken-word recordings, podcasts and music. You can cut and combine clips, mix tracks, apply effects and export audio in formats including WAV, MP3, FLAC and Ogg. Spectrogram view helps you inspect frequencies rather than working only with waveforms.
This download is the publisher-linked Audacity 4.0.1 Universal DMG for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, without the MuseHub installer. The publisher says the Universal DMG does not support macOS 10.14 or earlier; those systems need the separate Intel-only download. The publisher lists macOS 14 and 15 as tested, rather than guaranteeing every older release.
Some formats, including M4A, WMA and AC3, require the optional FFmpeg library. Audacity also needs fast, uninterrupted disk access, so network storage and some external drives may be unreliable for active projects. The gallery image shows an older Mac interface from Softonic, not the current Audacity 4 design.
