What is Blockbench?

Blockbench combines low-poly modeling, texture painting and animation in one editor. Use cuboids for a block-based look or mesh tools for more complex low-poly shapes. Its Mac desktop app uses Electron; a separate web app is also available.

You can generate UV maps and texture templates, paint directly on a model or work in the 2D texture editor. The animation editor supports rigging and position, rotation and scale keyframes, with a graph editor for adjustments. A built-in plugin store adds tools, export formats and model generators.

The linked 5.2.2 DMG is the ARM64 build for Apple silicon Macs. The publisher offers a separate x64 Mac package, so this is not a universal Mac download. For Minecraft projects, note the publisher's specific warning that flipbook animations do not work for Bedrock attachables. Minimum macOS requirements were not established by the sources used here.

What it offers

  • Create cuboid-based models or use mesh tools for low-poly shapes.
  • Generate UV maps and templates, then paint in the 3D viewport or 2D texture editor.
  • Rig models and animate position, rotation and scale with keyframes and a graph editor.
  • Extend the editor through plugins that add tools, export formats and model generators.

Good to know

  • The linked DMG is ARM64 for Apple silicon; x64 Macs need the separate publisher package.
  • The publisher warns that flipbook animations do not work for Minecraft Bedrock attachables.
