What is Checkmate MP3 Checker?
Checkmate MP3 Checker examines the structure of MP3 files so you can identify tracks that need attention. It checks whether frames appear in the expected locations, whether frame headers are correct and whether those headers remain consistent throughout the file. Its Windows interface resembles a file browser, with a folder location and a results table for individual tracks.
The publisher's screenshot shows OK and Broken results beside MPEG version, layer, bitrate, CBR or VBR status, sample rate, frame count, duration and size. This makes it useful for reviewing a folder of music rather than treating every file as an unexplained pass or fail. The project also provides mpck, a separate command-line interface with recursive directory checking and an option to report only bad files. The download linked here is the Windows graphical executable, mp3checker.exe, not the command-line build.
Checkmate is a checker, not an MP3 repair tool. The publisher explains that removing damaged frames can lose audio, while changing a checksum can merely make corrupt data look correct. Unrecognized tags can also appear as unidentified data without proving that a track is audibly damaged. Use the report to locate files for closer listening or replacement from a better source; do not read an OK result as a listening test or a Broken result as an automatic repair instruction.
What it offers
- Check MP3 frame locations, header correctness and header consistency.
- Browse a Windows folder interface with per-file OK or Broken results.
- View bitrate, sample rate, frame count, duration and other file details in the publisher's illustrated interface.
- Use the project's separate mpck command-line tool for recursive checks and bad-file-only reporting.
Good to know
- Does not repair damaged MP3 files or reconstruct missing audio.
- Unidentified data may be unrecognized tags rather than proof of audible corruption; the publisher recommends listening to damaged files to assess the effect.
- The publisher identifies a Windows interface but the reviewed documentation does not specify a minimum Windows version or the selected executable's processor architecture.
