What is CoolPlayer?

CoolPlayer is a Windows audio player for listeners who want a compact playback window and a separate playlist editor. The project lists MPEG audio playback through the MAD engine, OGG Vorbis support, internet streaming and support for Winamp input plugins. Freeform skins change the interface, while an eight-band convolution equalizer provides sound adjustment.

Its tools extend beyond playback: the publisher lists an ID3 multitagger, a file renamer and MP3-to-WAV conversion. For conversion, the official FAQ directs users to choose File writer as the output in Options. Playlist paths also need attention: the FAQ says an M3U saved beside its audio files omits their paths, whereas PLS always saves paths.

This is a legacy release, not a newly updated player. The official build 219 announcement and the SourceForge binary archive both date to June 1, 2008. Softonic’s October 21, 2025 listing update is not the release date. Compatibility with current Windows versions has not been verified. The download links to the project’s build 219 binary ZIP archive, not the separately listed source-code ZIP; the archive was checked with HEAD only and was not downloaded or run.

What it offers

  • Play MPEG audio through the MAD engine, with OGG Vorbis support.

  • Adjust audio with an eight-band convolution equalizer.
  • Use the publisher-listed ID3 multitagger, file renamer and MP3-to-WAV conversion tools.

Good to know

  • Build 219 dates from June 1, 2008; compatibility with current Windows releases is unverified.
  • M3U playlists saved alongside their audio files omit paths according to the official FAQ; PLS retains them.
  • Publisher-listed streaming and plugin capabilities were not tested against current services or plugins.
