What is Exact Audio Copy?

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) extracts music from audio CDs using a CD or DVD-ROM drive. It is aimed at people converting a legally obtained CD collection into audio files who want more feedback about read errors than a simple fast extraction provides. The publisher offers it free for non-commercial use.

Its secure extraction modes use repeated reading or drive-provided error information to check audio data. EAC also supports AccurateRip and reports the time positions of possible errors that it cannot correct, so you can listen to the affected passages. The publisher's Windows download is version 1.8 and includes the CDRDAO and FLAC packages.

Secure reading trades speed for checking: troublesome sectors can require repeated reads, and drive caching can slow extraction further. A damaged disc is not guaranteed to produce an error-free copy. Fast and burst modes reduce checking; the publisher states that burst mode performs no error checking. What it offers

  • Extract audio CDs using standard CD and DVD-ROM drives.
  • Use secure reading modes with repeated reads or supported drive error information.
  • Use AccurateRip support as part of the extraction workflow.
  • Locate possible uncorrected read errors by their time positions.
  • Get the publisher's version 1.8 package with CDRDAO and FLAC included.

Good to know

  • Secure extraction can be slower than other ripping modes, especially with damaged discs or drives that cache audio data.
  • Some read errors cannot be corrected; EAC reports possible problem positions rather than guaranteeing a perfect copy.
  • Burst mode performs no error checking; fast mode also reduces error detection.
  • The publisher's free-use offer is limited to non-commercial purposes.
