What is GeoSetter?
GeoSetter helps organize photographs by where they were taken. You can enter known coordinates and altitude, match images to a GPS track, or copy location data between already geotagged images and corresponding buddy files, such as RAW and JPEG pairs. It uses ExifTool to write metadata and supports JPEG, TIFF and a publisher-listed range of camera RAW formats.
Beyond location tags, GeoSetter can edit IPTC information, change shooting dates and export to Google Earth. The publisher describes an embedded map for displaying coordinates, image directions and tracks, with online lookup for location fields and altitude.
Treat the map as a legacy dependency, not a verified modern-Windows feature. The publisher still lists stable version 3.5.3, released on 29 October 2019, and Internet Explorer 10 or higher. Its historical explanation says the map uses an Internet Explorer ActiveX control and does not work correctly on Windows XP. Current Windows 10/11 compatibility and online map operation have not been verified here; the publisher screenshot illustrates the interface, not a successful current installation.
What it offers
- Enter known coordinates and altitude for photos and edit IPTC/XMP/Exif metadata through ExifTool.
- Synchronize photographs with GPS track files, including GPX, NMEA, PLT, Sony LOG and IGC.
- Transfer geotagging information between already tagged images and corresponding buddy images.
- Change shooting dates and export to Google Earth.
- Display photo positions, directions and tracks on an embedded map, subject to its legacy browser and internet dependencies.
Good to know
- The publisher lists Internet Explorer 10 or higher; its embedded map does not work correctly on Windows XP. Installing a different default browser does not replace the embedded control.
- Stable version 3.5.3 is dated 29 October 2019. Compatibility with current Windows 10/11 builds and operation of online map services have not been verified.
- Map display, automatic location-field filling and altitude lookup require an internet connection.
