What is LibreSprite?
LibreSprite is a pixel-art and sprite-animation editor for making characters, objects, patterns and textures. Work with layers and frames, compare adjacent animation frames with onion skinning, and check motion with real-time previews. Built-in palettes and pixel-precise drawing tools support small, deliberately placed details.
Tiled drawing mode helps with repeating patterns and textures, while multiple open sprites let you work across related assets. LibreSprite is developed independently from Aseprite after forking its last GPLv2-licensed commit. It is not the current proprietary Aseprite release.
This entry links to the publisher's version 1.3 DMG for Apple Silicon Macs. Intel Macs have a separate x86_64 package on the same release page; choose the package for your processor. Layer groups in imported .ase files are flattened rather than preserved as editable groups, so projects that depend on nested layer organization need particular care. The screenshot illustrates the editor with the optional Neutral Dark theme; its operating system and application version are not established by the publisher image.
What it offers
- Build sprite animations using layers and frames, with real-time previews and onion skinning.
- Use built-in color palettes or create your own.
- Draw repeating patterns and textures in tiled drawing mode.
- Edit multiple sprites at once using pixel-precise tools such as filled contour, polygon and shading modes.
Good to know
- Imported .ase layer groups are flattened; LibreSprite does not preserve editable layer-group structure.
- The linked DMG is for Apple Silicon (arm64), not Intel Macs; the publisher offers a separate x86_64 DMG.
