What is loopMIDI?

loopMIDI creates virtual loopback MIDI ports so Windows applications can exchange MIDI through the ports they would normally use for hardware connections. It is useful when one music application needs to send MIDI to another on the same computer. Tobias Erichsen's utility uses the virtualMIDI driver to create the ports.

The configuration window lists your ports, their total data and current throughput. Closing that window leaves loopMIDI running in the system tray rather than ending the application. Its tray menu provides port configuration, deactivation and an option to start automatically when you log in.

These ports belong to the current user and exist only while loopMIDI is running; logging off removes them. Keep that dependency in mind when setting up a session. The publisher explicitly lists Windows 7 through Windows 10 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Softonic lists Windows 11, but the publisher page does not confirm that newer system, so Windows 11 compatibility is not established here. The linked package is the publisher's ZIP download, not a software installation or safety test.

What it offers

  • Create virtual loopback MIDI ports for communication between Windows applications.
  • View port names, total data and throughput in the configuration window.
  • Keep the application running in the system tray when its configuration window closes.
  • Enable automatic startup at user logon from the tray menu.

Good to know

  • Ports exist only while loopMIDI runs and disappear when the user logs off.
  • Intended for local MIDI connections on one computer, not network MIDI transport.
  • Publisher documentation lists Windows 7–10; Windows 11 support is not confirmed by that source.
  • Softonic lists a free license but says commercial use requires contacting the developer; confirm applicable terms before commercial deployment.
