What is MakeHuman?
MakeHuman is a standalone character-creation tool for building virtual humans through graphical controls rather than modeling every vertex by hand. Adjust broad attributes such as age, height and weight, then refine details such as eye shape and finger length. The 1.3.0 release adds body-shape targets by Elvaerwyn for choosing an initial body form.
Use the result as a starting point for a wider 3D workflow. MakeHuman documents exports to OBJ, FBX, Collada, STL and Ogre3D, with further refinement possible in software such as Blender. Save a native .mhm project as well as your export: MakeHuman cannot read its exported formats back into the application, and OBJ exports are static meshes without a rig.
The linked download is the publisher's Windows ZIP for version 1.3.0. Its release notes describe fixes for Windows 11 viewport problems, but the publisher also warns that the standalone 1.x engine uses aging graphics standards and that fixes and updates generally should not be expected. The community forum and asset repository were taken offline in October 2026; the static documentation and asset packs remain available.
The application code is free and open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later. Bundled assets use CC0, and the publisher permits commercial use of characters made from those assets. Third-party assets can have different licenses, so check their individual terms before using them in a project.
What it offers
- Shape characters with macro controls for age, height, weight and other overall attributes, plus detailed controls for features such as eyes and fingers.
- Choose body-shape targets introduced in MakeHuman 1.3.0 as a starting point for character proportions.
- Export meshes in documented formats including OBJ, FBX, Collada, STL and Ogre3D for use in other 3D applications.
- Use bundled CC0 assets in character models, including commercial projects, subject to separate terms for any third-party assets.
Good to know
- The publisher says the standalone 1.x application is largely no longer modified; its older graphics engine can have compatibility problems on some systems.
- Export is one-way: MakeHuman cannot reopen its exported formats. Save a native .mhm project for later edits; OBJ exports do not include a rig.
- The publisher's October 2026 notice says the community forum and asset repository are offline. Static documentation and asset packs remain online.
