What is Natron?

Natron is a node-based compositor for visual effects and digital post-production. Connect and group processing nodes to combine images, refine mattes and build reusable effects. Its tools cover chroma keying, rotoscoping, 2D tracking and keyframe animation, with OpenFX plugin support and headless rendering for scripted or render-farm workflows.

This entry links to the publisher’s Intel x86_64 DMG for Natron 2.5.0, labeled macOS 11+ on the official download page. Apple Silicon Macs run this stable build through Rosetta 2; the publisher lists a separate native Apple Silicon alpha, which is not the download offered here. Older macOS versions have separate packages.

Natron does not have a 3D workspace. The 2.5.0 release notes also identify rendering stalls and issues with some image and MTS video formats. The screenshot is a publisher-provided example of Natron’s workspace, not a capture of this package running on a Mac.

What it offers

  • Connect, group and save node graphs as reusable compositing tools.
  • Use chroma keying, matte refinement, multi-layer rotoscoping and 2D tracking.
  • Animate parameters with curve and dope-sheet editors.
  • Extend the compositor with OpenFX plugins and community PyPlugs.
  • Render without the graphical interface for scripted or render-farm workflows.

Good to know

  • The stable macOS build is Intel-only; Apple Silicon requires Rosetta 2. The separately offered native Apple Silicon build is alpha.
  • No 3D workspace is included.
  • Version 2.5.0 release notes list occasional rendering stalls, PCX/PSB image-format issues and MTS video-reading problems.
