What is OpenToonz?
OpenToonz brings drawing, digital painting and compositing into one 2D animation workflow. Work with raster or vector images, arrange drawings in an Xsheet or timeline, and connect effects in a node-based schematic. Its palette-based painting tools keep color information separate from painted drawings, making provisional colors practical during production. The project grew from Toonz, originally developed by Digital Video and customized for Studio Ghibli's production work.
The publisher permits commercial and non-commercial use without a purchase fee. The source code uses a Modified BSD license, with separate terms for third-party components and MyPaint brushes; the downloadable binary also has publisher Terms of Use. This entry links to the publisher's OpenToonz 1.8.0 macOS PKG, not a nightly build or a third-party installer.
Mac users should distinguish OpenToonz from GTS: the publisher's separate GTS scanning tool is Windows-only. The published Mac requirements list macOS 10.14 or later and an Intel Core i-series processor; native Apple Silicon support for this package has not been established here. The screenshot is a legacy publisher illustration of the Xsheet and effects schematic, not a capture of the macOS 1.8 release.
What it offers
- Work with both raster and vector images in a 2D animation project.
- Arrange animation through an Xsheet or timeline interface.
- Combine effects through a connected node-tree GUI and extend effects with plug-ins.
- Use palette-based digital painting with anti-aliased lines and color data separate from drawings.
Good to know
- The separate GTS animation-scanning tool is available for Windows only, not macOS.
- Publisher Mac requirements specify an Intel Core i-series processor; native Apple Silicon compatibility for the linked PKG is not confirmed here.
