What is Plogue AlterEgo?
Plogue AlterEgo, styled Alter/Ego by its developer, is a real-time singing synthesizer for music production. Type lyrics and play notes on a MIDI keyboard to perform them as synthesized vocals. Its voice-synthesis approach focuses on research from the 1990s onward, rather than the vintage speech technology targeted by Plogue's chipspeech. Sound parameters can be modified for expressive performances.
On Windows, the publisher lists a 64-bit standalone application plus VST, VST3 and ProTools AAX plug-ins. The standalone format provides an option outside a plug-in host; the plug-in formats suit work inside compatible music software. The published requirements are Windows 10 x64 or higher, an Intel or AMD dual-core processor or better, at least 1 GB of RAM and 100 MB of disk space.
Plogue labels Alter/Ego a legacy product. Its download catalog lists Windows version 1.981 dated June 27, 2025; that publisher version is used here instead of Softonic's older 1.571 listing. Voice banks have their own styles and license terms, so the free synthesizer should not be taken to mean that every voice is free or included. The publisher screenshot shows an ALYS voice configuration and French lyrics; it illustrates the interface, not the contents of the linked installer.
