What is Ruffle?

Ruffle opens Flash SWF content on your Mac without running it inside a browser. The standalone desktop application is useful for revisiting saved Flash games and animations: choose an SWF through its file chooser or supply a file path from the command line. Its desktop interface includes persistent preferences, bookmarks and a recently opened files menu.

This entry links to the publisher’s stable 0.7.1 macOS universal TAR.GZ package, not a nightly build or the separate web package. You need your own SWF content. Ruffle supports ActionScript 1, 2 and 3, but emulation remains incomplete: graphical inaccuracies and other compatibility bugs can affect individual files.

The publisher screenshot illustrates the shared desktop preferences interface in a Windows-style window; it is not a macOS capture or a capture of this exact release.

What it offers

  • Open local SWF games and animations in a standalone desktop player.
  • Load a file through the file chooser or by passing an SWF path on the command line.
  • Keep desktop preferences between sessions, including rendering-backend settings.
  • Return to content through bookmarks and the recently opened files menu.

Good to know

  • Flash emulation is incomplete; individual SWF files can have graphical inaccuracies or other compatibility bugs.
  • SWF content must be supplied separately; the player is not a bundled Flash-game collection.
