What is Schism Tracker?
Schism Tracker is a sample-based music composition tool for people who want the Impulse Tracker style of working on a Mac. Its pattern editor arranges notes and effects in channel columns rather than a conventional audio timeline. The player uses a heavily modified ModPlug engine, with changes aimed at improving Impulse Tracker playback.
The linked release is the publisher's macOS universal ZIP for Apple Silicon, Intel 64-bit and PowerPC; the separate classic Mac OS 9 package is not selected here. Expect an old-school interface and nonstandard keyboard shortcuts: the publisher's FAQ explicitly warns that familiar shortcuts such as Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V do not behave as newcomers may expect. The screenshot is the publisher's historical 20160914 pattern-editor image, not a capture of the linked 20260524 release or proof of a particular macOS version.
What it offers
- Compose sample-based music using an Impulse Tracker-style workflow.
- Edit note and effect data in a channel-based pattern editor.
- Play tracker music through a modified ModPlug engine with Impulse Tracker playback improvements.
- Use the publisher's universal macOS package for Apple Silicon, Intel 64-bit and PowerPC.
Good to know
- The interface uses nonstandard keyboard shortcuts; familiar copy and paste commands do not necessarily behave as they do in other applications.
