What is Sequator?
Sequator combines a series of night-sky photographs by aligning the stars and stacking the exposures. It is intended for photographers working with short, unblurred exposures, including shots taken without an equatorial mount. Sky-region masks, light-pollution reduction and star-light enhancement provide controls for processing the stack, while 16-bit TIFF output leaves room for further editing.
For landscapes, Freeze ground processes the moving sky and fixed foreground separately. This mode needs at least four images with matching exposure settings and a stationary camera; it is not intended for shots made while moving the tripod or tracking on an equatorial mount. Star-trails composition and batch processing for time-lapse frames offer alternative workflows.
The publisher distributes version 1.6.2 r2 as a 64-bit Windows ZIP dated August 18, 2024. Extract all included files into a normal folder before running it. The stated requirements are Windows 10 or 11, at least 8 GB RAM, an Intel i5-2400 or higher and the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64 runtime or a compatible later runtime. Sequator is not open source: its free-use terms restrict commercial use, with an explicit allowance for personal studios to sell derivative results. Check those terms for your intended use.
What it offers
- Align stars across multiple exposures and stack them to average random noise.
- Mark a sky region and use Freeze ground to stack a stationary foreground separately from the sky.
- Adjust light-pollution reduction, star-light enhancement, automatic brightness and HDR processing.
- Use star-trails composition or batch stacking to prepare time-lapse frames.
- Read supported camera RAW files and uncompressed 16-bit TIFF; export 16-bit TIFF or 8-bit JPEG.
Good to know
- Windows only; the publisher does not provide native macOS or Linux versions.
- Freeze ground and Select best pixels require at least four images with matching exposure settings. Freeze ground also requires a fixed camera and foreground.
- Camera RAW support is not universal; the 1.6.2 r2 notes specifically exclude Nikon HE/HE*. The publisher suggests DNG or uncompressed TIFF conversion for unsupported RAW files.
- Free use is subject to non-commercial and redistribution restrictions, with a stated personal-studio exception for selling derivative results.
