What is Shotcut?

Shotcut brings video clips, audio and images together in a multitrack editing project. Its native timeline editing lets you work with supported media without first converting everything to a single import format. Trim and arrange clips, mix audio, add text or subtitles, and apply filters with keyframed adjustments before exporting a finished video.

It suits projects that need a flexible timeline and control over formats, rather than only a quick trim. Dockable panels provide a playlist, media properties, filters and export controls. Saving an MLT XML project preserves the edit for later; use Export to create a separate video for sharing.

The selected download is the publisher's universal macOS DMG for macOS 12–27, listed as shotcut-macos-26.9.28.dmg under release v26.9.27. Older macOS releases need an older Shotcut build. The publisher also warns that Macs from 2013 or earlier may show preview color problems with its Metal-based rendering. The screenshots show an older Mac interface, not the appearance of the selected release.

What it offers

  • Arrange and trim clips on a multitrack timeline with thumbnails, audio waveforms and ripple editing.
  • Mix supported media formats, resolutions and frame rates in one project using FFmpeg-based format support.
  • Apply video and audio filters, color correction, transitions and keyframed parameter changes.
  • Create and edit subtitles, including imports from SRT, VTT, ASS and SSA files.
  • Save editable MLT XML projects and export video through supplied or custom presets.

Good to know

  • This download requires macOS 12 or newer; the publisher provides older builds for macOS 11, 10.14 and 10.15.
  • Macs from 2013 or earlier may have video-preview color problems after the move to Apple Metal, according to the publisher.
  • Saving an MLT XML project does not create a shareable video; a separate export is required.
