What is SMPlayer?
SMPlayer provides a graphical interface for playing video and audio with MPlayer or mpv. The publisher lists formats including AVI, MP4, MKV and MOV, plus playback-speed controls, audio and video filters, and subtitle-delay adjustment. It remembers playback position and per-file settings, so you can return to a video without setting everything again.
The linked download is the 26.8.29 Qt 5 disk image for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 11 or later. Intel Macs need the separate package on the publisher's macOS download page. This package is not for macOS versions earlier than 11.
The screenshot is an older publisher-supplied Windows interface example with the Modern skin, not a capture of the current macOS build. Window controls and appearance on a Mac can differ.
What it offers
- Play common audio and video formats, including AVI, MP4, MKV and MOV.
- Resume playback with remembered file settings such as subtitle selection and volume.
- Adjust playback speed and audio/subtitle delay, and apply audio or video filters.
- Choose skins and icon themes for the player interface.
Good to know
- The linked Apple Silicon package requires macOS 11 or later; Intel Macs need the separate Intel download.
