What is SMPlayer?
SMPlayer is a free, open-source media player for watching videos and listening to audio without separately finding codec packs for common formats. The publisher lists AVI, MP4, MKV, MPEG and MOV among its supported formats. It can remember a file's playback position and settings, including the selected audio track, subtitles and volume, so you can continue a viewing session later.
Playback controls include speed adjustment, audio and subtitle delay, filters and an equalizer. Skins and icon themes change the interface, while the preferences let you adapt how the player behaves. The Windows installer offers a choice of MPlayer or mpv as the playback engine.
The linked package is the publisher-listed SMPlayer 26.8.29 alternative installer for Windows XP and other 32-bit systems; its filename explicitly identifies it as unsigned. It is not the separate 64-bit package for Windows 8 and above. Broad format support does not guarantee playback of protected media: Softonic's review specifically reports incomplete playback of DRM-protected WMV files.
