What is Sonic Visualiser?

Sonic Visualiser helps you examine what is happening inside a music recording rather than just listen to it. Display a waveform to inspect changes in amplitude, add a spectrogram to explore frequency content over time, and use annotation layers to mark events or regions. It is aimed at close study of recorded audio, including musicology, archiving and signal-processing research.

Its interface organizes visualizations into panes and layers. Stack panes to compare views along a shared time axis, or overlay layers within one pane. Zoom and scroll through a passage while keeping related displays aligned. Editable annotation layers can hold time instants, notes, regions and text; sessions preserve the analysis workspace.

The linked 5.2.1 DMG is the publisher's 64-bit Intel/ARM package for macOS. Additional feature extraction uses separately installed Vamp analysis plugins: none are bundled with the application. Sonic Visualiser does not support VST, AudioUnit or LV2 plugins, so an existing collection in those formats cannot be used here.

What it offers

  • View audio as waveforms, spectrograms and spectrum layers.
  • Stack time-aligned panes or overlay multiple visualization layers.
  • Add editable annotations for time instants, notes, regions and text.
  • Save analysis sessions and extend feature extraction with separately installed Vamp plugins.

Good to know

  • No analysis plugins are bundled; install Vamp plugins separately for additional feature extraction.
  • VST, AudioUnit and LV2 plugin formats are not supported.
