What is Surge XT?
Surge XT is a virtual instrument for playing presets and building your own synthesizer patches. Each patch has two scenes that can be layered or split across the keyboard. Three oscillators per scene, several synthesis methods, filters and modulation routing let you shape a sound before adding effects. The patch browser includes text search and favorites for finding sounds to use as starting points.
On macOS, Surge XT is available as a standalone application or an AU, VST3 or CLAP instrument inside a compatible music host. The publisher identifies the Mac build as universal for Intel and Apple Silicon. This entry links to the publisher's 1.3.4 DMG rather than a nightly build.
Host compatibility matters: a plug-in needs a host that supports its format. Surge XT is also a different plug-in from the older Surge 1.9, so the manual advises keeping the older version installed to reopen projects that use it. Save custom patches in the user data folder; reinstalling can overwrite changes made inside the factory content folder.
What it offers
- Layer two scenes or split them across the keyboard within one patch.
- Shape sounds with three oscillators per scene, including wavetable, FM and string synthesis options.
- Route modulation from LFOs and envelopes, then process sounds with built-in effects.
- Find patches with text search and favorites; use MPE and microtuning for expressive performance.
- Run as a standalone Mac application or an AU, VST3 or CLAP instrument.
Good to know
- Plug-in use requires a host that supports the selected AU, VST3 or CLAP format.
- Surge XT does not replace the older Surge plug-in in existing projects; retain Surge 1.9 for projects that use it.
- Reinstalling can overwrite edits in the factory content folder; store custom patches in the user data folder.
