What is Synfig Studio?
Synfig Studio is a 2D animation editor for building scenes from vector shapes and bitmap artwork. Set key positions and let vector tweening calculate the intervening frames, or use bones to animate cutout characters. Layers provide geometric shapes, gradients, filters, distortions and transformations; linked parameters and mathematical expressions support more elaborate character controls.
This entry links to the publisher’s macOS DMG for stable release 1.4.5. Softonic lists version 1.5.5, but the publisher identifies that release as a development version, so it is not the download selected here. New users should allow time to learn the editor’s tools. The screenshot is a publisher illustration of the cross-platform interface, not a capture of this Mac package; its appearance can differ from the macOS build.
What it offers
- Animate vector artwork by setting key positions and calculating in-between frames automatically.
- Combine vector shapes and bitmap images in layered 2D scenes.
- Use geometric, gradient, filter, distortion and transformation layers.
- Build cutout animation with bones and deform bitmap artwork with the Skeleton Distortion layer.
- Link layer parameters directly or through mathematical expressions for character controls.
Good to know
- The extensive tools take time to learn; Softonic notes that beginners may need the online user manual.
- The linked package is stable release 1.4.5, not the newer 1.5.5 development build listed by Softonic. Its CPU architecture and version-specific minimum macOS requirement were not established from the retrieved release assets.
