What is TouchOSC?
TouchOSC is a modular control surface for software and hardware that support MIDI or OSC. On Mac, its integrated editor lets you arrange controls into custom layouts, configure messages, and use the same application to run the controller. It suits building a tailored interface for music production, live performance, or visual applications rather than working with a fixed set of controls.
The editor offers different control shapes, nested containers, colors, and text. Multiple TouchOSC instances can synchronize layout editing across a network, so a desktop layout can be previewed on connected devices. For more complex interactions, scripts extend control behavior; local messages connect controls without writing code. MIDI routing and OSC over UDP or TCP provide the connection options for compatible applications.
The linked Mac package is version 1.5.3, build 266, for macOS 10.13 or later on Intel and Apple silicon. Hexler offers an unrestricted desktop evaluation download, but TouchOSC is proprietary paid software, not freeware. A single-user desktop license covers supported Mac, Windows, and Linux versions; mobile editions require separate app-store purchases.
What it offers
- Create and run custom control layouts with the integrated editor and runtime.
- Send and receive MIDI and OSC messages across multiple connections, including OSC over UDP and TCP.
- Synchronize editing and preview layouts across networked TouchOSC instances.
- Customize interactions with scripting or connect controls through local messages without code.
- Arrange varied control shapes, nested containers, colors, and multi-line text.
Good to know
- Desktop use is licensed per user; mobile editions are purchased separately even if you own a desktop license.
- Controlled software or hardware must support MIDI or OSC; TouchOSC is not a general remote control for every application.
