What is TuxGuitar?

TuxGuitar is a guitar tablature editor and player for writing parts and listening back to multi-track arrangements. It opens Guitar Pro, Power Tab Editor, TablEdit and MIDI files, making it useful for working with tablature shared in several formats. The desktop interface presents notation and tablature alongside editing tools and playback controls.

This entry links to the Windows x86-64 EXE installer for version 2.1.1. The release notes say the Windows packages include OpenJDK. The publisher also offers a separate Windows ZIP package; it is not the installer linked here. The image shows the publisher's desktop interface in several themes, not a Windows installation tested by SoftGalaxy.

Check file compatibility before sharing a native TuxGuitar project: files saved in the new format used by version 2.0.0 and later cannot be read by older versions. Export to the old format when a collaborator uses an older release. The publisher states that its packages are not officially signed; this entry does not establish their safety or recommend disabling operating-system protections.

What it offers

  • Edit and play multi-track guitar tablature.
  • Open Guitar Pro, Power Tab Editor, TablEdit and MIDI files.
  • View notation and tablature with editing palettes and playback controls in the desktop interface.
  • Export tablature to the old TuxGuitar format for use with older releases.

Good to know

  • Native files in the format used by TuxGuitar 2.0.0 and later cannot be read by older releases unless exported to the old format.
  • The publisher states that the available packages are not officially signed.
