What is The Battle for Wesnoth?

The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based fantasy strategy game built around recruiting troops, choosing terrain and developing experienced units across connected campaign battles. It suits players who want story-driven solo campaigns as well as tactical matches against other people. Multiplayer supports Internet games, local networks and hot-seat play on one computer.

Terrain changes a unit's chance of being hit, while time of day changes damage for units with certain alignments. Combat uses hit probabilities rather than guaranteed damage, so even a carefully positioned attack can miss. Campaign survivors can return in later scenarios; units from a standalone multiplayer scenario do not carry into future games.

The linked download is the 1.18.8 Windows 64-bit EXE installer from the publisher's stable 1.18 branch, distributed through SourceForge. It requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later; it is not a 32-bit Windows package. Community campaigns, factions and maps are available through the game's add-ons server, and a built-in map editor supports creating your own battlefields.

What it offers

  • Play story-linked singleplayer campaigns and recall surviving veterans in later scenarios.
  • Battle other players online, over a local network or in hot-seat mode on one computer.
  • Plan around terrain-dependent defenses and time-of-day damage modifiers.
  • Download community campaigns, factions and multiplayer maps through the official add-ons server.
  • Create custom battlefields with the built-in map editor.

Good to know

  • Attacks use hit probabilities; favorable terrain and planning do not guarantee that a strike will land.
  • Units from standalone multiplayer scenarios do not carry into future games, unlike campaign survivors.
  • This Windows package requires a 64-bit system running Windows 10 version 1903 or later.
