What is Blockout II?

Blockout II brings the original DOS BlockOut puzzle to Windows with a three-dimensional playing pit and updated graphics. Arrange blocks in depth rather than on a flat board, using the pit view and block outline to judge placement. The developer aims to reproduce the original game's movement and closely match its scoring.

Practice mode gives you a separate way to work on placements, while demo mode shows a computer player. High scores can be accompanied by replay files and submitted to the project's online score database, which also provides rankings and statistics.

This entry links to the publisher's version 2.5 Windows setup file on SourceForge, rather than the older 2.4 listed on Softonic. The publisher specifies Windows Vista or higher and OpenGL. An aborted game does not save its replay, so pressing Esc before finishing prevents that run from producing a replay for upload. Compatibility and score uploading have not been tested here.

What it offers

  • Three-dimensional falling-block play adapted from the original DOS BlockOut.
  • Practice mode and a computer-player demo mode.
  • High-score replay files and an online score database with rankings and statistics.
  • Configurable block transparency and a frame limiter with a VSync option.

Good to know

  • The Windows version requires OpenGL; the publisher lists Windows Vista or higher.
  • Aborting a game with Esc does not save its replay file. Replays are required for online score submission.
