What is Cave Story?
Cave Story combines side-scrolling platforming with exploration and a story set inside a floating island. You guide an amnesiac through its caves, meet the Mimigas and uncover secrets while fighting enemies and bosses. Pixel art and a character-driven adventure distinguish it from a sequence of standalone platforming stages.
Life Capsules increase your health, while collected energy powers up your weapons. Taking damage can drain that energy and lower a weapon’s level, so combat affects more than your remaining health. Secrets and different endings give your decisions consequences beyond reaching the next area.
This entry covers Studio Pixel’s original freeware game, not the commercial Cave Story+. The linked ZIP is a pre-patched English fan translation by Aeon Genesis hosted by the Cave Story Tribute Site. Studio Pixel’s own archive provides the Japanese original; the community English package should not be mistaken for an official English publisher release.
