What is Chess Position Trainer?

Chess Position Trainer is for chess players who want to organise and recall their own opening repertoire. It stores positions rather than treating each opening as a separate game, so transpositions can be recognised across openings. Folders, openings and variations provide a structure for the lines you want to study, while PGN import lets you bring existing chess material into that structure.

The training tools use a flash-card approach, with scheduling to revisit learned positions. For a practical study routine, collect the lines you intend to play, train those positions, and use the repertoire-comparison feature to investigate where a played game left your preparation. The publisher also documents blindfold training, statistics and engine analysis, but these advanced tools should not be assumed to be included in the free edition.

The publisher's edition table reserves features such as flash-card training, blindfold mode, UCI engine support and the statistics module for Pro. It advertises all Pro features unlocked for 30 days and sells a separate Pro licence. Its update page additionally states that the version requires a CPT 5 licence. Read those terms before relying on continued Pro access. The linked file is the publisher's Windows 5.1 EXE installer; its availability was checked with HEAD only, not by installing or running the program.

What it offers

  • Organise a position-based opening repertoire with folders, openings and variations.
  • Recognise transpositions across openings and import PGN material.
  • Use Pro's flash-card training, scheduling and blindfold mode to practise repertoire positions.
  • Pro can compare played games with your repertoire, analyse positions with a UCI engine and show repertoire statistics.

Good to know

  • The free edition does not include all advertised training and analysis tools; the publisher reserves several for Pro and advertises a 30-day Pro trial.
  • The 5.1 update page states that a CPT 5 licence is required; continued Pro use should not be treated as unrestricted freeware.
  • Version-specific requirements exclude Windows XP and require .NET Framework 4.5+. Legacy XP/Vista sidebar text conflicts with those requirements; Windows 11 compatibility is unverified.
