What is Cute Chess?

Cute Chess combines a graphical chess interface with a command-line tool for running engine matches. Use the desktop GUI when you want to follow a game on a board, or use cutechess-cli when you need to repeat games between configured engines with specified time controls. The project also provides a library for developers working with chess engines.

The command-line workflow is particularly useful for comparing engines: choose a tournament format, supply PGN or EPD openings, and save completed games as PGN. Engine command paths and protocol settings are part of that setup; the interface is not a substitute for configuring the engines that will play.

This download is the publisher’s 64-bit Windows EXE for version 1.5.1. The sources checked do not establish an exact minimum Windows version. The screenshot is the publisher’s historical GNU/Linux GUI image, included to illustrate the application rather than to claim the current Windows build looks identical.

What it offers

  • Graphical chess interface alongside a separate engine-match command-line tool.
  • Configure UCI or XBoard engine commands and time controls.
  • Automate round-robin, gauntlet, knockout or pyramid engine tournaments with cutechess-cli.
  • Select openings from PGN or EPD files and save games to PGN.
  • Open-source library for developers working with chess engines.

Good to know

  • Engine matches require configured engine commands and the correct UCI or XBoard protocol; the publisher’s example assumes an external engine is available.
  • Exact minimum Windows version is not established by the release evidence; source-build prerequisites do not prove packaged runtime compatibility.
