What is Dwarf Fortress?
Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy simulation built around worlds that keep their history. In fortress play, you guide a dwarven outpost: dig across multiple levels, craft goods, trade with neighbors and defend the settlement while meeting the needs of its residents. Adventure play lets you explore the same kind of persistent world with a character or party, including places shaped by earlier games.
The Windows ZIP linked here is Dwarf Fortress Classic 53.16 from Bay 12 Games, not the separately distributed Steam or itch.io edition. Classic uses character-based visuals. The screenshots show historical Classic interfaces; they are not presented as captures of version 53.16.
The detailed simulation takes time to learn, and its descriptions include violence and mental anguish. The publisher still describes Dwarf Fortress as a work in progress. Choose it for open-ended world simulation and fortress management rather than a short, guided campaign.
