What is FreeCol?

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game about developing colonies into an independent nation. Inspired by Colonization, it combines an isometric map with colony management and supports multiplayer. Its Classic ruleset follows the original game's approach, while mod support allows different ways to play.

The publisher lists version 1.2.0 for Windows as an EXE installer with Java included. This is the bundled-Java package, not the separate platform-independent installer. The publisher specifies at least 2 GB of system RAM, an 800 × 600 display and 0.5 GB of disk space; packages without bundled Java require Java 11 or above. The screenshot is from the publisher's 1.0.0 gallery and illustrates the game interface rather than documenting the 1.2.0 Windows build.
