What is FreeOrion?
FreeOrion is a turn-based space empire and galactic conquest game built around the 4X model: explore, expand, exploit and exterminate. It draws inspiration from Master of Orion without aiming to clone or remake it. Choose it for a space-strategy campaign rather than a real-time action game. The project also provides scripting capabilities for customizing game mechanics and presentation.
The linked Windows package is the publisher’s 0.5.1.2 stable release. Its filename still contains “Win32”, but the release notes explicitly say the Windows build switched from x86 to x64. Use a 64-bit Windows system; do not select this installer for a 32-bit Windows installation. The publisher lists Windows 8.1 or later, OpenGL 2.1-capable graphics and a suggested minimum display resolution of 1280×800.
The gallery image shows an older FreeOrion Galaxy Setup interface, not a verified screenshot of version 0.5.1.2. It illustrates the game’s setup controls; current presentation can differ. The installer link was checked with a HEAD request only: the game was not installed or play-tested.

Good to know
- The 0.5.1.2 Windows release uses x64 despite its Win32 filename; it is not a 32-bit Windows package.
- Requires OpenGL 2.1-capable graphics; the publisher suggests at least a 1280×800 display.
- The source gallery screenshot depicts an older interface and is not evidence of the current release’s exact appearance.
