What is GZDoom?

GZDoom runs Doom-engine games and compatible community mods with rendering and scripting features beyond the original engine. It supports games including Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen and Strife. OpenGL and Vulkan rendering, advanced map features and ZScript make it useful for players exploring mods as well as creators building them.

This download is the Windows 64-bit ZIP archive for GZDoom 4.14.2, released on May 3, 2025. The publisher now lists GZDoom under Historic and identifies UZDoom as its primary port. This card keeps the GZDoom download separate rather than presenting a different application as a GZDoom update.

GZDoom is an engine, not a bundled copy of Doom. You must provide a compatible game IWAD separately. The full-featured hardware renderer requires OpenGL 3.3; the publisher recommends Vulkan or OpenGL 4.5 capability. A simpler renderer has lower requirements but omits custom shaders and post-processing.

What it offers

  • Run supported Doom-engine games, including Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen and Strife.
  • Use OpenGL or Vulkan rendering.
  • Load compatible community mods using advanced mapping features and ZScript.
  • Support map effects such as colored lighting, 3D floors and portals.

Good to know

  • Requires a separately supplied compatible game IWAD; the engine download is not a complete copy of Doom.
  • The publisher lists GZDoom 4.14.2 as Historic; UZDoom is now its primary port.
  • Full-featured hardware rendering requires OpenGL 3.3. The simpler OpenGL ES 2.0 renderer lacks custom shaders and post-processing.
