MapTool for Windows
Run tabletop role-playing sessions with maps, tokens, chat and fog of war in MapTool, a free, open-source virtual tabletop for Windows.
What is MapTool?
MapTool gives a game master a shared tabletop for in-person or remote role-playing sessions. Build maps, place tokens, track initiative and use chat while players connect through its integrated server. It is not tied to one game system, so groups can use it for different rulesets rather than adopting a single built-in game.
Lighting, token vision and fog of war help control what players can see. Topology tools let the game master define obstacles that block sight, while optional macros automate parts of a campaign. The official repository also documents token properties for tracking health and status.
This is an installed desktop application, not a browser-based tabletop. The linked Windows package is the publisher-recommended MSI for version 1.18.7. Before upgrading, keep campaign files and other personal content outside the installation directory: the release notes warn that content stored there can be lost during an update. The documentation screenshot below illustrates an older Windows interface and is not a capture of version 1.18.7.
What it offers
- Create maps and manage tokens for tabletop role-playing campaigns.
- Connect remote players through an integrated server, with chat and initiative tracking.
- Control visibility with lighting, token vision, fog of war and sight-blocking topology.
- Use optional macros to automate campaign tasks without committing to one game system.
Good to know
- Requires a desktop installation; it does not run as a browser-based tabletop.
- Campaigns and other personal files stored inside the installation directory can be lost during an upgrade; keep them elsewhere and back them up.
