What is Luanti (formerly Minetest)?

Luanti is a free, open-source platform for playing and creating games built from blocks. Formerly called Minetest, it runs different community games rather than prescribing one set of survival or building rules. Play solo, join a multiplayer server, or customize a game with mods and texture packs. Creators can use its Lua API to add items and change gameplay.

For singleplayer, install a game when Luanti first opens: its content browser lists the available choices. Installing the engine is not the same as installing a playable singleplayer game. Downloaded mods also need to be enabled for the world you want to use them in; when joining an online server, the client receives the server's required resources automatically.

The linked download is the Luanti 5.17.0 64-bit Windows EXE installer, not the portable ZIP. The publisher lists Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and 11 as supported. Separate portable packages exist for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows; do not treat this installer as the 32-bit option.

What it offers

  • Choose community-made voxel games through the built-in content browser.
  • Play singleplayer, on a local server or on online multiplayer servers.
  • Customize games with mods and texture packs.
  • Create games and mods using the Lua API.

Good to know

  • The engine download alone is not a ready-to-play singleplayer game; first choose and install a game through the content browser.
  • Downloaded mods must be enabled for each world where you want to use them.
