What is OpenRA?

OpenRA brings three classic Westwood strategy games to macOS as community-built reimaginings: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Dune 2000. It is a separate open-source engine, not the original games or an EA-supported release. Its updated gameplay includes attack-move orders, unit veterancy and fog of war, with online multiplayer and support for custom maps.

This download is the stable release-20250330 Mac disk image, containing separate launchers for the three games and code for Intel and Apple silicon Macs. The publisher lists macOS 10.11 or later; on macOS 10.11–10.14, the launcher additionally requires Mono 6.12 or later.

The disk image is not the whole game-data setup. On first launch of a mod, OpenRA prompts you to download or copy files from the original game. Those assets have separate license terms and are not covered by the engine's GPL license.

What it offers

  • Includes reimaginings of Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and Dune 2000.
  • Modernized RTS controls and mechanics include attack-move, unit veterancy and fog of war.
  • Play online multiplayer games and use community-created maps.
  • Separate Mac launchers for the three included games in one DMG package.

Good to know

  • Each mod needs original-game assets, downloaded or copied during first-run setup; these assets are licensed separately from the engine.
  • macOS 10.11–10.14 additionally requires Mono 6.12 or later.
