What is OpenRCT2?
OpenRCT2 brings RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 park building and management to macOS. Lay out rides, shops and facilities while balancing guest happiness, park reputation and profit. Scenario play gives you objectives to complete within a time limit; sandbox play lets you build with optional restrictions and finances disabled. Cooperative multiplayer lets players work on a park together.
The project expands the original game with an improved interface, additional editing tools and increased limits. The linked v0.5.6 release is the publisher's universal macOS ZIP package for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, rather than the older development build shown on the discovery listing. Extract the ZIP and move OpenRCT2.app to Applications, following the publisher's Mac setup guide.
OpenRCT2 is a free, GPL-licensed engine, not a replacement for owning the original game assets. You must supply the required RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 files separately and point OpenRCT2 to their location on first launch. The Mac guide covers copying an existing installation and obtaining files from owned GOG or Steam copies. RCT1 files are optional for adding its content; they do not remove the RCT2 requirement.
