What is OpenRCT2?
OpenRCT2 lets you build roller coasters, lay out paths, add shops and facilities, and manage an amusement park's finances and guest satisfaction. It reimplements RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 with an improved interface, more editing tools, increased limits and cooperative multiplayer. Scenario play gives you objectives to meet, while sandbox play offers more flexible building with optional restrictions and finances.
The download linked here is the publisher's Windows x64 EXE installer for version 0.5.6, not the separate launcher or a development build. The engine is free and open source, but it does not replace the required original game assets: install RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 or RCT Classic separately so OpenRCT2 can use their graphics and music. On first launch it searches for the game files and asks you to choose their folder if it cannot find them.
For multiplayer, check which build the server uses before choosing your download. The Windows installation guide notes that most, but not all, online servers use development builds, so the release linked here may not suit the server you want to join.
What it offers
- Build and maintain amusement parks with rides, shops, facilities and guest management.
- Choose objective-based scenarios or flexible sandbox play with optional restrictions and finances.
- Use an improved interface, additional editing tools and increased limits compared with the original game.
- Build parks with other players through cooperative multiplayer.
Good to know
- Requires separately obtained RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 or RCT Classic game files; the free engine is not a standalone replacement for those assets.
- Many online servers use development builds rather than the release installer linked here; check the server's build requirements.
