What is Cube 2: Sauerbraten?
Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a first-person shooter built around fast arena combat and maps you can edit inside the game. Multiplayer modes include deathmatch, instagib, capture and capture the flag, with team variants for many modes. An in-game server browser helps you find multiplayer matches. For solo play, the documentation describes both monster invasions on deathmatch maps and progression-based single-player levels.
Its cooperative editor is a distinct reason to choose it: players can reshape map geometry together in-game rather than work only in a separate level editor. The engine also includes a configuration and scripting language for customization.
This entry links to the publisher's Windows EXE for the 2020 edition. The older release should not be read as a verified compatibility promise for current Windows versions. The game is freeware, but that does not make all of its artwork freely reusable: the engine source uses the zlib license, while maps, models and other media retain their individual copyrights and license terms.
What it offers
- Multiplayer deathmatch, instagib, capture and capture-the-flag modes, including team variants.
- Cooperative in-game editing for changing map geometry with other players.
- An in-game server browser for finding multiplayer servers.
- Single-player monster-invasion and progression-based modes.
- Built-in configuration and scripting for customization.
Good to know
- The linked Windows package is the 2020 edition; compatibility with current Windows versions has not been independently verified.
- The zlib license covers engine source, not all bundled artwork. Reusing game media requires checking its individual rights; the publisher permits redistribution of the unmodified installer.
