What is StepMania?
StepMania is a free, open-source dance and rhythm game for home and arcade use. Follow a song's chart and press the matching arrows in time with the music, using a keyboard or a configured dance pad. Its support for four-panel and five-panel dance formats makes it useful for different chart styles rather than a single fixed song list.
You can expand the game with songs, change the interface with themes and NoteSkins, or use the integrated editor to create your own step charts. Custom content needs some care: older StepMania 3.9 and 4 themes are not supported by StepMania 5, and adding songs or setting up hardware can require manual configuration.
The linked download is the publisher-listed StepMania 5.0.12 Windows win32 EXE installer. Its version-specific README lists Windows 7 as the minimum and requires Visual C++ 2015 redistributables and the June 2010 DirectX runtime. Those are publisher requirements, not a claim that we installed or tested the game on current Windows versions.
