What is TORCS?

TORCS, The Open Racing Car Simulator, combines human driving with programmable racing opponents. Choose a car and track for practice sessions or championships, race against AI drivers, or share a local split-screen race with up to four human players. Controls include keyboard, mouse, gamepad, joystick and steering wheel, subject to operating-system support.

For developers, the Robot Module Interface exposes simulation state and driving controls to custom AI drivers. The project provides a C++ Robot Tutorial and supports headless command-line races for simulation work. The separate Simulated Car Racing Championship server patch is needed for that project's network-controlled driver workflow; it is not the built-in C++ robot interface.

This entry links to the publisher's Windows EXE installer for version 1.3.10, released on October 1, 2026. TORCS requires working OpenGL graphics drivers. The gameplay screenshot is a publisher capture from version 1.3.9, not a test of this installer.

What it offers

  • Drive road, oval and dirt circuits against computer-controlled opponents.
  • Choose practice sessions or championships, with local split-screen racing for up to four human players.
  • Use keyboard, mouse, gamepad, joystick or steering wheel controls when supported by the operating system.
  • Develop custom C++ AI drivers through the Robot Module Interface and run headless command-line races.

Good to know

  • Working, properly configured OpenGL graphics drivers are required; the publisher documents startup failures caused by faulty graphics drivers.
  • The SCR network-controlled driver workflow requires a separate server patch; the standard Robot Tutorial covers built-in C++ drivers instead.
