What is TuxMath?

TuxMath, also called Tux, of Math Command, turns arithmetic practice into a comet-defense game. Read the equation on an incoming comet, type its answer and press Enter or Space to fire. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division provide the core practice, with harder questions introducing negative numbers and missing values.

The separate Factoroids activity uses an asteroid-shooting game to practice factoring numbers and simplifying fractions. It offers a different task from the main equation-defense game rather than a general-purpose maths calculator.

This entry links to TuxMath 2.0.2 for Windows, released through the publisher’s SourceForge project on 27 April 2011. Softonic labels its listing 2.0.3, but that is not the version of the publisher installer linked here. The release note says the 2.0.2 installer was tested on Windows XP and has a known bug that prevents starting turn-based multiplayer. Compatibility with current Windows releases has not been established here.

What it offers

  • Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems to destroy incoming comets.
  • Practice more advanced questions involving negative numbers and missing values.
  • Use Factoroids to practice factoring numbers and simplifying fractions.

Good to know

  • The publisher’s 2.0.2 Windows release note documents a bug preventing the start of turn-based multiplayer.
  • The linked installer dates from 2011; the publisher release note reports Windows XP testing, not verified Windows 10 or 11 compatibility.
