What is Widelands?

Widelands puts you in charge of a small clan that grows from a headquarters into a working settlement. You place buildings and connect them with roads while carriers move resources through the economy. Efficient supply routes matter: wood, food, iron and gold have to reach the buildings that use them. Five tribes offer different economic networks, giving settlement planning a central role alongside military expansion.

Play story-based single-player campaigns, face AI opponents or join other players over the Internet or a LAN. Playable tutorials introduce the game, and the included map editor lets you create your own maps.

This entry links to the Widelands 1.3.1 disk image for Intel 64-bit Macs running macOS 12 or newer. Apple Silicon has a separate publisher package, so this Intel download is not the native Arm build. Multiplayer participants also need compatible versions: the publisher explicitly states that 1.3 and 1.3.1 cannot share a network game.

What it offers

  • Build a settlement around resource production and road-based transport between buildings.
  • Choose from five tribes: Barbarians, Empire, Atlanteans, Frisians and Amazons.
  • Play single-player campaigns and tutorials, or compete against AI opponents.
  • Join Internet or LAN multiplayer games.
  • Create maps with the included editor.

Good to know

  • This download is the Intel 64-bit package for macOS 12 or newer; Apple Silicon uses a separate native Arm package.
  • Widelands 1.3 and 1.3.1 cannot be combined in a network game.
  • OpenGL 2.1 or higher is required; the publisher recommends at least 800 MB of RAM for fluent gameplay.
