What is Zandronum?
Zandronum is a multiplayer-oriented Doom source port for cooperative campaigns, competitive matches and community-made maps and game modes. Its client/server networking supports hosted games with up to 64 players. Built-in options include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel, Capture the Flag, Survival and Invasion, alongside OpenGL and software rendering.
The macOS download is a DMG containing Zandronum.app and the Doomseeker server browser. The publisher instructs Mac users to copy both applications to Applications and put compatible IWAD files in $HOME/Library/Application Support/Zandronum/. You can start Zandronum directly or use Doomseeker to find a server.
This is an engine, not a replacement for the game data. Supply a compatible IWAD from a supported game or a free alternative such as Freedoom. Commercial Doom game data has separate terms. The screenshot illustrates the publisher-featured Torlation community mod; it is not a claim that this mod is bundled or that the image was captured on macOS.
What it offers
- Join or host client/server multiplayer games with support for up to 64 players.
- Play competitive modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel and Capture the Flag, or cooperative Survival and Invasion.
- Choose OpenGL or software rendering and customize key bindings, freelooking and jumping.
- Use community-made maps, weapons, monsters and game modes.
- Use the Doomseeker server browser included in the macOS DMG.
Good to know
- Compatible IWAD game data is required separately; commercial game data is not supplied by the source port.
- The publisher download page does not specify a macOS minimum version or CPU architecture; Apple Silicon-native support is not established by these sources.
