What is ArgoUML?

ArgoUML helps you describe a software design with UML diagrams rather than keeping its classes, relationships and interactions in separate notes. Its diagram editor sits alongside a project explorer and a details panel for the selected model element. Class, use-case, activity, statechart, collaboration, deployment and sequence diagrams are among the supported types.

Design critics analyze a model and put suggested improvements in a To-Do list instead of interrupting the drawing process. XMI import and export provide a model-exchange route, while PNG and SVG exports let you include diagrams in documentation. The publisher also documents Java code generation and reverse engineering.

This entry links to the publisher's archived 0.35.1 Windows setup executable. ArgoUML's documented modeling standard is UML 1.4, not UML 2.0. The publisher describes these releases as old; the presence of an installer is not evidence of compatibility with current Windows or Java releases. Choose it for a UML 1.4 workflow, not for a requirement that depends on UML 2 features.

What it offers

  • Create UML 1.4 diagrams, including class, use-case, activity and sequence diagrams.
  • Inspect a model through the project explorer and edit the selected element's properties in the details panel.
  • Review design-critic suggestions and personal reminders in a To-Do list.
  • Import and export XMI models, and export diagrams as PNG, SVG and other documented formats.
  • Use the documented Java code-generation and reverse-engineering tools.

Good to know

  • The documented modeling standard is UML 1.4; UML 2.0 is not supported by this listing's documented release.
  • The download is an archived release. Compatibility with current Windows and Java versions has not been established here; no installation or runtime test was performed.
  • XMI support is version-specific: the publisher documents importing UML 1.4 XMI 1.1 and 1.2, but writing only XMI 1.2.
