What is AutoIt?

AutoIt is a scripting language for automating repetitive Windows desktop tasks. Write BASIC-like scripts to send keystrokes, move the mouse and manipulate application windows or individual controls. Functions, loops, regular expressions, COM support and Windows API calls also make it useful for general scripting beyond simple input sequences.

The main package includes the AutoIt program files, documentation, examples, a lightweight SciTE editor, the Aut2Exe script-to-executable converter and AutoItX for DLL/COM integration. Aut2Exe can turn a script into a standalone Windows executable. The screenshot shows the publisher's SciTE-Lite editor with an AutoIt GUI example; it is an illustration of the editing interface, not a capture of this release running here.

This download is the publisher's ZIP-wrapped full-installation package, not the separate portable ZIP. The full SciTE4AutoIt3 editor with additional coding utilities is a separate download. For version 3.3.18.0, use the operating-system list on the download page: Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11, plus the listed Windows Server releases. The publisher identifies 3.3.16.1, rather than this version, as the last release supporting Windows XP and Server 2003.

What it offers

  • Simulate keystrokes and mouse movement, and manipulate Windows application windows and controls.
  • Write scripts with BASIC-like syntax, functions, loops, string handling and regular expressions.
  • Build graphical interfaces and call COM objects, external DLLs and Windows APIs.
  • Convert scripts into standalone executables with the included Aut2Exe tool.
  • Use the bundled lightweight SciTE editor, documentation, examples and AutoItX DLL/COM integration.

Good to know

  • The full SciTE4AutoIt3 editor and its additional coding tools are separate from the lightweight editor included in the main package.
  • This version is not the publisher's option for Windows XP or Server 2003; the download page identifies 3.3.16.1 as the last release supporting those systems.
