What is Avogadro?

Avogadro helps you draw molecular structures, inspect chemical files and explore molecules and materials in 3D. It is designed for chemistry education and research workflows, including molecular modeling, computational chemistry and materials science. The Mac interface provides drawing tools, display choices and a molecule workspace, so you can switch between editing a structure and navigating around it.

You can open formats such as CML, XYZ, SDF, Mol2 and PDB through Open Babel support, or import a molecule by name using the online NIH Chemical Resolver. Built-in force fields help tidy up hand-drawn structures, while plugins extend tools, file formats and interfaces to other programs. Version 2.1.0 adds a Z-matrix editor for internal coordinates and lets you edit distances, angles and dihedrals in the Measure tool.

The linked package is the publisher's Avogadro 2.1.0 DMG for Apple Silicon, not the separate Intel build. The publisher's documentation is used for this release: the Softonic Mac listing observed during research still identifies version 2.0.0. Importing by name depends on an external online service; opening an existing local chemical file is a separate workflow. The screenshot is the publisher's annotated Mac interface illustration, not evidence of an installation or a test of this package.

What it offers

  • Draw and navigate molecular structures in a 3D workspace with selectable display styles.
  • Open chemical files including CML, XYZ, SDF, Mol2 and PDB through Open Babel support.
  • Import molecules by name through the NIH Chemical Resolver online service.
  • Use built-in force fields to refine hand-drawn structures and plugins to extend functionality.
  • Edit internal coordinates in the Z-matrix editor and distances, angles and dihedrals with the Measure tool in version 2.1.0.

Good to know

  • This linked DMG is for Apple Silicon Macs; Intel Macs need the publisher's separate Intel download.
  • Import by name relies on the external NIH Chemical Resolver service rather than only local files.
