What is BetterZip?

BetterZip is a Mac archive manager for inspecting compressed folders, extracting files and building archives to share. You can add, remove or rename archive entries, or open a file in an external editor and save its changes back to the archive. List, outline, icon and column views provide different ways to browse contents without first unpacking the whole archive.

For repeated tasks, presets save options such as destination, format, encryption and filters. Finder integration applies those presets to selected files, while AppleScript, Shortcuts and a command-line helper support automated workflows. Its Quick Look extension previews archive contents in Finder and is free even without a BetterZip license.

The main application is commercial software with a 30-day full-featured trial, not an unlimited free archiver. Creating RAR archives requires an external command-line utility; support for opening a format does not mean that every format can be created. The linked publisher ZIP is identified as version 6.1 and requires macOS 13.5 or later. The screenshot is the publisher's BetterZip 6 interface illustration, not evidence of a local installation or a test of version 6.1.

What it offers

  • Create ZIP, 7-Zip, TAR, DMG and other supported archive formats; open and extract over 30 formats.
  • Add, delete, rename and edit archive contents, including saving changes made in an external editor.
  • Use AES-256 encryption and an encrypted password vault for archive passwords.
  • Save reusable compression and extraction presets, with filters for names, paths, sizes and ages.
  • Preview archive contents through the free Finder Quick Look extension, or automate tasks with AppleScript, Shortcuts and a command-line helper.

Good to know

  • The main application is a paid product after its 30-day full-featured trial; the free Quick Look extension does not make the full application free.
  • Creating RAR archives requires an external command-line utility.
  • Version 6.1 requires macOS 13.5 or later; the publisher lists separate legacy downloads for older systems.
