What is BitTorrent Classic?

BitTorrent Classic is the Windows desktop client for downloading and sharing files over the BitTorrent peer-to-peer network. It can manage multiple torrents at once, allocate bandwidth to individual transfers and schedule downloading or seeding for particular times of day. RSS feeds can automate downloads from sites you choose. This entry covers Classic Basic, not the separate browser-based BitTorrent Web product.

The free Basic edition includes advertising. The publisher lists ad removal, malware protection, a media player and file conversion among its paid offerings; those are not promised here as Basic features. Downloading also shares pieces of the same files with other peers, so upload limits matter if your connection has restricted bandwidth. The publisher licenses the application for personal, non-commercial use.

The gallery image is a historical Windows screenshot labeled BitTorrent 7.6, retained by Softonic. It illustrates an older interface rather than the appearance of the current download. The publisher download endpoint can change its target; the linked Windows installer was checked by HEAD only, without downloading or running the program.

What it offers

  • Manage several torrent downloads and seed files from a Windows desktop client.
  • Set upload and download speed limits and allocate bandwidth to individual torrents.
  • Schedule when downloading and seeding take place.
  • Use RSS feeds to automate selected torrent downloads.

Good to know

  • Basic includes ads; ad removal and Pro features such as malware protection and file conversion require a paid edition.
  • Downloading through the client also uploads pieces of those files to other peers, using upstream bandwidth.
  • The publisher EULA limits the application license to personal, non-commercial use.
