What is BKChem?
BKChem is a chemical drawing program for building molecular diagrams bond by bond. Bond-length and angle restrictions help keep a drawing consistent, while common-ring templates, abbreviated groups, charges and several arrow types provide the pieces for structures and reaction schemes. Editing tools include alignment, scaling, rotation and unlimited undo and redo.
Drawings can be exported to SVG, PDF, PNG and OpenDocument formats. Chemical interchange includes Molfiles and basic CML support; SMILES and InChI import cover subsets rather than every possible input. The XML-based native format and support for user-written plugins and batch scripts offer ways to process drawings beyond the graphical editor.
The linked Windows EXE is version 0.13.0, announced on February 23, 2009 and still labeled the stable release on the publisher's download page. The separately listed 0.14.0-pre2 is a preview, not the version linked here. Publisher compatibility documentation names Windows XP; operation on current Windows versions has not been verified for this card. The screenshot is the publisher's historical BKChem 0.9.0 interface, not a capture of the linked installer running on Windows.
What it offers
- Draw bonds with length and angle restrictions; use common-ring templates, abbreviated groups, radicals and charges.
- Add reaction arrows, rich text, colors and simple vector shapes.
- Align, scale and rotate drawings with unlimited undo and redo.
- Export diagrams to SVG, PDF, PNG and ODF; exchange Molfiles and basic CML data.
- Extend workflows with user-written plugins and batch scripts.
Good to know
- Legacy Windows release: the publisher documents Windows XP use, but compatibility with Windows 10 or 11 has not been verified here.
- SMILES and InChI import support is partial; the publisher does not promise proprietary-format import or export.
